Women's health is focus of Thursday event in front of state Capitol building

FRANKFORT – Kentuckians are invited to gather from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the state Capitol to take part in the annual Women’s Health Walk, an event sponsored by the Kentucky Department for Public Health, Frankfort Regional Medical Center and the Kentucky Commission on Women.
The event will include opening remarks from Cabinet for Health and Family Services Secretary Audrey Tayse Haynes and Commission on Women Executive Director Eleanor Jordan. Also included are educational and promotional booths pertaining to women’s health, as well as a walk along Capital Avenue.
Participants in the walk should gather near the steps at the front of the Capitol. Booths will open at 11 a.m.
“Women’s health is such an important issue facing the Commonwealth,” Haynes said in a statement issued by her office. “Yet it’s often overlooked by the people who need to hear the message most – women. This event gives us a chance to come together, learn more about the topics that impact our lives and health, and have some fun. I strongly encourage any and all to attend.”
The Women’s Health Walk coincides with national activities planned for National Women’s Health Week, a health observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Women’s Health. Designed to encourage women to make their health a top priority, the 2012 theme is – “It’s Your Time.”
Topics being emphasized this year include:
▪ Visiting a health care professional to receive regular checkups and preventive screenings.
▪ Being physically active.
▪ Eating healthy.
▪ Paying attention to mental health, including getting enough sleep and managing stress.
▪ Avoiding unhealthy behaviors, such as tobacco use.
“This event is a fun way for us to promote National Women’s Health Week and raise awareness at the same time,” Joy Hoskins, director of the Division of Women’s Health, said. “The event gives attendees the opportunity to be physically active, while being educated about topics important to maintaining good physical and mental health. We encourage anyone who is interested to participate.”
